About Durga in the brass tradition.
Durga — also called Sherawali or Mahishasurmardini — is the warrior goddess form of the Devi, depicted with ten arms each holding a different weapon gifted by various gods. She rides a lion (or tiger) into battle against Mahishasura (the buffalo demon). Her many forms include: Mahakali (the dark goddess), Mahalakshmi, Maheshwari, and the Navadurga (the nine Durgas worshipped during Navratri).
Worship context.
Durga is the central deity of Navratri (nine nights, twice yearly) and Durga Puja (the Bengal/Assam/Odisha version of Navratri, focused on the lion-riding goddess). Large brass Durga idols (18–48 inch) are commonly ordered for community pandals during Durga Puja.
