Iconography

About Lakshmi in the brass tradition.

Lakshmi — also called Mahalakshmi or Shri — is the goddess of wealth, prosperity, fortune, and abundance. In brass idol tradition, she is most commonly depicted seated on a lotus, with four arms holding lotus flowers and gold coins pouring from her hands. The owl (or sometimes an elephant) is her vahana. Postures include seated, standing (Ashta Lakshmi forms), and the unique "Lakshmi on lotus with coins raining" composition central to Diwali altars.

When to Worship

Worship context.

Lakshmi is central to Diwali worship (the single biggest day for Lakshmi idols), Dhanteras, Akshaya Tritiya, and daily Friday worship in many households. Lakshmi is the consort of Vishnu and is depicted in many forms — Ashtalakshmi (eight forms), Mahalakshmi (the great goddess), and Dhanyalakshmi (goddess of grain).

Care

Caring for your Lakshmi brass idol.

Lakshmi idols in gold polish should be kept dry. Wipe with a soft microfiber cloth monthly. For Diwali altars, apply a thin coat of ghee (clarified butter) on the idol base as part of the ritual — this is a traditional practice that also protects the brass.
