Why Brass Idols Need Regular Care
Brass naturally reacts with air and moisture, forming copper oxide that gives old brass its dark patina. With simple, regular care, a brass idol can stay radiant for decades — even centuries.
Daily & Weekly Maintenance
- Dust daily with a soft, dry microfiber cloth.
- After ritual bathing with milk, honey, or water, dry the idol completely. Moisture accelerates tarnishing.
- Keep incense smoke at a distance — soot settles into fine carvings and is difficult to remove.
Monthly Deep Cleaning Methods
Method 1: Tamarind Paste (Best for Natural Brass)
Mix tamarind pulp with a pinch of salt. Apply with a soft toothbrush, scrub gently, rinse with warm water, and dry immediately. The mild acidity dissolves tarnish without damaging the brass.
Method 2: Lemon + Salt
Squeeze fresh lemon juice, mix with a teaspoon of salt. Rub gently, leave for 2 minutes, rinse and dry. Excellent for removing stubborn dark spots.
Method 3: Flour + Vinegar + Salt
Mix 1 tablespoon each of flour, white vinegar, and salt. Apply, leave 10 minutes, then rinse. Good for larger idols.
What NOT to Do
- ❌ Never use steel wool or abrasive scrubbers — they leave permanent scratches.
- ❌ Avoid chemical cleaners on gold-polished idols — they strip the lacquer coating.
- ❌ Do not soak idols in water for extended periods — causes white mineral deposits.
Gold Polish vs Natural Brass Care
Gold Polish Idols have a lacquer coating — clean only with a damp soft cloth. Natural Brass & Antique Idols can be cleaned with any of the methods above and re-polished at home.
